The Pros and Cons of Onyx in Your Denver Home

November 20, 2015

Using onyx in a Denver home remodel is not a decision any homeowner should make without knowing all the facts. Odds are good you’ve already looked at other materials such as granite or marble. Other natural stones can be beautiful and durable, but if you’re looking at onyx, it’s because you want something rare and truly unique. The important thing to ask is if you have the discipline and patience to add something so exceptional to your Denver area home. We here at HTI Granite & Cabinetry have come up with a list of pros and cons to help you make the best decision for a Denver kitchen remodel.
  • Onyx is Fragile – Phrases like “hard as stone,” and “etched in stone,” and “like a rock,” make us all think all natural stones are completely solid and hard. This could not be less true, and onyx is one of the premier examples of that. Because onyx is fragile, it usually includes a fiberglass-backing compound used to strengthen the slab and keep it uniformly together. Because of its fragility, onyx isn’t able to be extracted from the ground like other stones. This means the slabs are smaller than other natural stones like granite.
  • Maintenance is Paramount – Because onyx is also soft as well as fragile, it does not hold up to regular, daily family use. Moving around dishes, pots and pans, or chopping fruits and vegetables will scratch up the surface. Anything hard and/or sharp will also scrape up your countertops easily. So, if you use your kitchen on a regular basis or have children, onyx may not be the best option for your home right now. Additionally, any kind of acidic liquid – lemon juice, red wine, vinegar, etc. – will dull any onyx surface. This means onyx needs to be sealed properly and cleaned with a specialized stone cleaner frequently to prevent scratching and staining.
  • Rare & Expensive – Depending on who you are and why you’re looking at onyx, the cost can be either a pro or a con. Onyx is among the most expensive material you can purchase for your home. This is due to the rarity of the stone and the fact that so few homes and remodels would ever consider such a pricey stone. So, if you do decide to use onyx, you will be one of the few to use such a unique and simply gorgeous natural stone in your kitchen or bathroom remodel.
Onyx comes in a variety of colors with veining adding contrasting colors. This makes each slab look like different works of art. The proper lighting can make these colors shine, brightening up any room. If you’re looking for a natural stone that will add a class and heightened sophistication to you home, is beautiful, rare, and unique, contact HTI Granite & Cabinetry today and we’ll show you our selection of onyx and help you find the right stone for your Denver remodel.
